Help my TOSHIBA satellite m30 can't detect my LAN cable from my internet connection?

Help my TOSHIBA satellite m30 can't detect my LAN cable from my internet connection, I already install the LAN driver. but when I check my network connection I can see 1394 connection then when i click on properties, internet protocols and obtain ip add. It can't still detect it.. if im not mistaken if u connect the rj45 on the lan card it must detect it immediately and prompt the 100mbs connection... that doesnt happen to my laptop.. NOTE: It is newly formatted laptop with win. xp os..
